Eight splash pad design mistakes to avoid
Common design errors on commercial splash pads in the UAE and GCC — feature density, age zoning, drainage, surfacing, shade and the recirculation decision.

Splash pads look simple, which is exactly why they get designed badly. Almost every mistake below only becomes visible after opening, when fixing it means breaking up a slab.
1. Too few features across too much slab
The most common error by a distance. A pad reads as empty long before it actually is, because the impression is set by spray coverage rather than deck area. Working density:
| Deck area | Feature count |
|---|---|
| 100 m² | 6–9 |
| 200 m² | 10–15 |
| 400 m² | 18–26 |
| 600 m²+ | 28–40 |
2. No age zoning
Toddlers and eleven-year-olds in one undivided space serves neither. The older children take the high-energy features, the toddler parents leave, and you have built for half your market. Divide the deck into a toddler zone with low jets and gentle arches, a mid zone with arches, rings and mushrooms, and an active zone with tipping buckets and cannons.
3. Choosing drain-to-waste by default
It is cheaper to build and it consumes potable water continuously. At UAE tariffs a mid-size pad running drain-to-waste can absorb the entire build saving within two seasons. Above roughly 150 m², or anywhere publicly accessible, design for recirculation from the start. Retrofitting it means demolishing the slab you just laid.
4. Sizing flow for everything running at once
Unless every feature genuinely runs simultaneously, sizing for that peak wastes plant capacity and money. A sequencing controller runs zones in rotation, cuts required flow substantially, and adds interest for users because the pad changes while they are on it. Decide this at design stage — it determines the pump specification.
5. Under-sizing drainage
Size drainage for the peak, not the average. Standing water on a splash pad is a slip hazard and a compliance problem, and it is the fault that generates complaints fastest.
6. Dark surfacing
Dark decks in Gulf sun exceed safe contact temperatures. Children run on this barefoot. Specify light-coloured, non-slip, cushioned surfacing and check the temperature rating, not only the slip rating.
7. Treating shade as phase two
An unshaded pad is unusable from roughly 10am to 4pm for much of the year. That is not a comfort issue, it is the removal of most of the operating day. Shade over at least the toddler zone belongs in the original budget, and it frequently costs as much as the features themselves.
8. Ignoring where parents will actually sit
Sightlines get drawn from where the plan says seating goes, not from where people choose to sit — which is the shaded side, always. Walk the design from the real seating position before you commit. A toddler zone a parent cannot see from the shade is a toddler zone that goes unused.
Two smaller ones worth knowing
- Noise adjacency. Aquatic play is loud. Next to an adult pool or under guest rooms, you trade one segment for another.
- No spares. A cracked nozzle or failed valve closes a feature for weeks if the part ships from scratch. Order a small spares package with the original consignment.
Getting the density right first time
Send the deck dimensions and the age split you are building for and we will propose a feature mix against the area rather than a catalogue. Commercial aquatic play equipment is supplied worldwide from our Dubai base. See the splash pad equipment range, the fuller splash pad planning guide, or request a quotation.
Planning a project?
Send your plot dimensions, height allowance and the age group you are building for. We will tell you what fits and what it costs delivered in AED.
