Specifying water park equipment for Gulf conditions
Why water park equipment specified for temperate markets fails in the UAE and GCC — UV degradation, surface temperature, corrosion, dust loading and evaporation.

Equipment that performs well in Europe can look tired here within three seasons. The failures are predictable and almost entirely avoidable at specification stage — but essentially unfixable afterwards.
1. UV degradation
Gulf UV exposure is far beyond what standard gelcoat specifications assume. The result is chalking, fading and eventually surface roughening on slide flumes — which matters commercially as well as visually, because a faded attraction stops photographing well and photography was a large part of what you bought.
Specify: the UV rating of gelcoat and plastics, and read what the warranty actually covers under this exposure. A warranty drafted against European conditions may not respond to a Gulf failure. Ask directly.
2. Surface temperature
This is a safety issue, not a comfort one. Unshaded fibreglass, decking and steel exceed safe contact temperatures for a large part of the year, and children use these surfaces barefoot.
Specify: light-coloured surfaces throughout, temperature ratings alongside slip ratings, and shade over any area where people stand still — queues, toddler zones, seating. Budget shade from the start; over a splash pad it frequently costs as much as the features.
3. Corrosion
Fibreglass copes. Steel, fixings and fasteners do not, particularly on coastal sites where salt-laden air accelerates everything. Equatorial African installations add humidity to the same problem.
Specify: galvanised or stainless fixings as standard rather than as an upgrade, and a defined corrosion specification for coastal projects.
4. Dust and filtration loading
Particulate loading here runs well above the assumptions manufacturers build into filtration sizing. Under-sized filtration means shorter runs between backwashes, more water consumed, and water clarity that drifts during the busiest weeks.
Specify: filtration sized for regional loading rather than the default, and expect shorter service intervals in your maintenance planning.
5. Evaporation and water balance
Evaporation rates are high, particularly on wave pools and lazy rivers with large exposed surface areas. Combined with UAE water tariffs, this is a serious operating line.
Specify: recirculating systems for anything above a small pad, covered balance tanks, and a water balance calculation that uses regional evaporation figures rather than generic ones.
6. Water temperature
The counter-intuitive one. Pools can become uncomfortably warm in summer here, and on some projects chilling is a genuine requirement rather than an indulgence. It has to be designed in — retrofitting chilling to an existing plant room is expensive and sometimes impossible.
7. Operating season, not operating hours
Plan the calendar honestly. An outdoor unshaded attraction contributes little through peak summer midday and most through spring and autumn. Shade widens the window considerably; indoor or covered installations widen it further, which is why family entertainment centres in Kuwait and inland Saudi Arabia so often go indoors.
A specification checklist
- UV rating on gelcoat and plastics, with warranty scope confirmed in writing
- Surface temperature ratings for decks and slide surfaces
- Light-coloured surfacing throughout
- Galvanised or stainless fixings; corrosion spec for coastal sites
- Filtration sized for regional dust loading
- Recirculation and covered balance tanks
- Shade over queues, toddler zones and seating
- Spares package shipped with the original consignment
Why this sits with the supplier
A factory quoting to a drawing will supply the default specification unless someone asks for something else. Asking is the supplier's job, and it is the difference between equipment that looks right in year one and equipment that still looks right in year five.
Aqua Park Supply provides commercial water park equipment from Dubai to markets across the Gulf and Africa, where these conditions are the norm rather than the exception. See our quality and compliance position or request a quotation.
